FFA Greenhand Ceremony

During The Great Frederick Fair

FFA members to receive FFA Greenhand Degree

Students from Frederick County high schools in their first year of FFA membership will receive the FFA Greenhand Degree at 7 p.m. Sunday, September 15, during  the 151st Great Frederick Fair. The ceremony will be held at the Livestock Pavilion (Building 32). In the past five years, more than 200 first-year members have been recognized for this honor at the fair.

The ceremony will be conducted by the Maryland State FFA Officer Team. Being recognized as a Greenhand and participating in the Greenhand Ceremony also gets members started in completing the requirements for their Chapter, State, and American degrees.

According to Ms. Herndon, “earning the Greenhand Degree  symbolically turns the doorknob to the world of FFA. Members have acquainted themselves with the basic foundations of our organization, and are eager to see what opportunities await them on the other side of the threshold. Although the Greenhand Degree is well earned, members are encouraged to dream big in order to achieve further degrees, as it is only the beginning of the journey as a member.”

Students from Brunswick, Catoctin, Frederick Career and Technology Center, Linganore, Middletown, Tuscarora, Urbana, and Walkersville high schools will be in attendance. To qualify for their Greenhand Degree, members must be enrolled in an agriculture class, have plans to conduct a supervised agriculture experience(SAE) program, and demonstrate knowledge of the FFA Organization.

The National FFA Organization is the nation’s largest youth leadership organization with almost 500,000 members in the United States and its territories. Through the FFA organization, FFA Advisors take pride in developing programs to develop student’s potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture education.

“The Great Frederick Fair is proud and honored to have these youth recognized during our fair,” said Fair General Manager Becky Brashear, CFE. “Recognition and honoring these future leaders of tomorrow is who and what we are about at the fair. As a fair, our commitment runs deep in the support of these fine young leaders.”
